The one they call Coco, because his head's a perfect sphere, is barely 4 feet tall. Still, he'd be willing, he said, to take on Kobe Bryant.

And who would the winner be?

"Probably me," said Haritskevin Merino Hernandez. "I'm little. I run faster."

The 7-year-old basketball player recently arrived in Los Angeles with a team of 16 other children to compete in a Christmas Cup Tournament against L.A.-based teams. The Niños Triquis, as they are known because most are descendants of Triqui Indians, came from the Southern Mexican state of Oaxaca — from remote mountainous regions where basketball has been played religiously for generations.

Their parents live poor and marginalized, often packed into huts with up to 30 relatives. But the children have become famous across Latin America for their court skills. They have won championships throughout Mexico and in Argentina and the Dominican Republic. Next year, they will compete in Spain, then Africa.

The boys are tiny, ages 6 to 12, but on the court they are fierce. Wherever they go, they draw attention because they prefer to play barefoot. Tennis shoes were never something they could afford.

On Saturday, the Oaxacan community gathered at the Toberman Recreation Center in Pico-Union to welcome the players to a daylong tournament against local Oaxacan teams. They honored them with a 14-piece brass band, a traditional Mixteco dance and a parade.

Crowds circled the boys, shouting praise and snapping photos.

"I'm so proud," said Leticia Diaz, 33, stretching her neck to get a peek. "They represent Oaxaca and my people. I want my children to see them and feel inspired."

The Central Los Angeles resident had a 9-year-old nephew playing on an opposing team, the Wildcats.

"But I'm rooting for the Triquis," she said. "I'm sure he'll understand."

The Niños Triquis have become a darling of Mexican television, their faces broadcast to the nation each time they return home from foreign games.

Three years ago, their coach, Sergio Zuñiga, launched the team with little fanfare. The native of Mexico City wanted to inspire indigenous kids from isolated villages to stay in school. Too many dropped out at as young as six or seven to work in the fields. Then they came north with relatives to find work in the United States.

"When you hardly have food and all you know is hard labor," Zuñiga said, "it's hard to stay motivated."

The children loved shooting hoops, so the former sports trainer began a basketball academy using loans and donations from friends.

At the Academy of Indigenous Basketball, located in five regions across the state of Oaxaca, about 2,000 children now have the chance to study and play ball.

The top 150 kids — those who keep a B+ grade point average, practice their native indigenous language and help with chores around the house — are sent to study in Oaxaca's capital.

Their lodging and meals are paid for with funds raised by the wife of Oaxaca's governor. And with help from Mexican corporations, the students get to compete abroad as part of the official Niños Triquis team.

"They are stars," Zuñiga said. "But most importantly, they are grounded. They know after every trip they will have to return to their families, to the same poverty they've always known. That's why they play with so much intensity."

Every trip abroad is a mix of luxury and making ends meet.

In Southern California, with help from local businesses, they will visit Disneyland and several universities. They also met the Lakers and attended one of their games. Kobe, unfortunately, was out injured.

Since the group cannot afford a hotel, the players and coaches — 26 people total — are sharing a four-bedroom house, courtesy of a local Oaxacan federation.

"It's a lot of fun," said Silvino Martinez de Jesus, 7. "And very loud."

Before the tournament games began Saturday, the players were kept secluded inside the recreation center's gymnasium. They needed to concentrate. They ate chips and drank sugary juice. They played with their coaches' cellphones and chatted among themselves in Triqui.

Their competition gathered outside, discussing in English a strategy to beat them. The Eagles, a team from Culver City, was well aware of the Triqui team's moves. They'd studied them on YouTube and had mixed feelings about their chances.

"I know they're super fast," said Vanessa Cruz, 11.

"And strong," said her teammate, Valentino Carrasco, 10.

"But I think we can beat them," Vanessa said.

"No way," Valentino countered.

Moments later, the two watched the star team take its place on the court for their first game. They played against the Wildcats. The crowd gathered around hollering and clapping, eight to 10 people deep.

The whistle blew, and they were off.

The Wildcats were immediately overwhelmed. Within the first five minutes, the tiniest player on the Triqui team, 10-year-old Melquiades Ramirez, dodged one player after another, his feet black with dirt from the asphalt, until he had sunk the ball into the net not once, but more than a dozen times.

"Muy bien! Muy bien," Zuñiga shouted from the sidelines.

The Wildcats hardly had a chance at the ball. Each time they touched it, a Triqui swooped in to steal it.

The final score: 47-3.

Vanessa and her teammates watched from the sidelines. They were next.

"OK," she said. "Maybe we're not going to win."

Footwear Fashion Tips: How wear socks + shoes!

The MALE FEET Store!

HOW TO WEAR SOCKS + SHOES

Sock and shoes have been a fashionable trend for a while now, but have you tried it yet?

Socks with heels, ankle boots and men's style shoes like brogues and loafers is a bold look but easy to carry off with a few simple steps.

The Saturday's singer Mollie King has been favouring them with her block heels.

We have a few tips on how you can wear the trend:
  1. Don't wear it with sophtiscated look: The trend is fun and quirky, so turning up for work with frilly socks and your court shoes won't work.
  2. Keep it fun: Choose pretty, frilly, bold and different socks to wear the trend. A pair of boring old black ones just won't have the same effect.
  3. Stick to these shoes: The trend works with chunky heels, wedges, brogues, loafers, ankle boots - so stick to these when wearing the look.

  • Try: Why not try a pair of socks with ankle boots and tights, they'll keep you that little bit warmer in this weather too. Pick a pair that will stand out, a little pop of colour will work perfectly.
  • And just remember: Socks and flat sandals will never look good.

Tracking the Men's Movement

SelfridgesSaks Fifth Avenue Beverly Hills

Eric Jennings likes to tell the story of a recent trip to the pedicurist as an illustration of how far the men’s market has come.

At the nail salon, the men’s fashion director at Saks Fifth Avenue looked around and realized that the male clientele outnumbered the women by four to one. And this, he noted, exemplifies the shift that has taken place in the market over the last few years.

“That is the new normal,” he said. “Men are taking their appearance more seriously and focusing on how they can better present themselves.”

New NIKE FREE TW '13 + Golf Iconic Footwear Fashion Design Review!

It’s Major Time:

NIKE Golf Adds Color to its Iconic TW ’13 Limited Edition Footwear

Combining groundbreaking innovation with longstanding tradition, Nike Golf has created the NIKE FREE Inspired TW ‘13 Limited Edition footwear in time for the first major championship of the season.

The Nike TW ’13 Limited Edition shoe (MAP $179.99) is crafted of waterproof multi-stretch synthetic leather in white, a NIKE FREE Inspired outsole popped in green, a touch of yellow on the top eye-stay and a hint of red in the TW logo on the tongue.

“The NIKE FREE Inspired TW ‘13 has done exceptionally well at retail with consumers raving about the performance of the shoe. Since its debut, we haven’t been able to keep the TW’13 in stock. We decided to release a limited edition version to celebrate the first major of the season.” said Lee Walker, Nike Golf’s Footwear Product Director.

The inspiration behind the Nike TW ‘13 footwear began with Tiger Woods himself. He asked for a shoe that gave him the same performance fit and feel as his NIKE FREE shoes when he runs and trains. That question ignited collaboration between Woods, Nike Golf’s footwear creation team and Nike’s Innovation Kitchen, led by Tobie Hatfield.
The NIKE FREE Inspired outsole is designed to mimic and conform to the natural motion of the foot, coupled with the protection and traction of a lightweight performance golf shoe. This innovative outsole delivers flexibility that allows the athlete to keep contact with the ground longer, unleashing the full power of their swing.
The Nike TW ’13 also features the Nike Dynamic Fit support system. Targeted support delivers unprecedented strength-to-weight ratio and one-to-one fitted support. Flywire infused nylon straps extend 360° from the footbed to the lacing system, securing the foot for an adaptive fit that provides golfers stability with mobility.
Limited quantities of this footwear will be available March 28, 2013 in retailers across the country as well as through www.nike.com.

Located at NIKE’s World Headquarters in Beaverton, Oregon, Nike Golf designs and markets golf equipment, apparel, balls, footwear, bags and accessories worldwide. Cushioned Running Shoes Alter Biomechanics - The MALE FEET Store

The MALE FEET Store

Cushioned Running Shoes Alter Biomechanics

New research found that padded heel running shoes may alter an adolescent runner's biomechanics + diminish performance.

Many of today's running shoes feature a heavy cushioned heel. New research presented at the 2013 Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) found that these shoes may alter an adolescent runner's biomechanics (the forces exerted by muscles and gravity on the skeletal structure) and diminish performance.

Researchers recruited 12 adolescent competitive athletes from local track teams, and asked them to run on a treadmill in large heel trainers, track flats and without any shoes (barefoot) at four different speeds. Biomechanics – stride length, heel height during posterior swing phase and foot/ground contact – were measured with a motion capture system.

"Running barefoot or running in less of a running shoe (toe shoes, for example) is a newer trend," said Scott Mullen, MD, an orthopaedic surgeon at The University of Kansas Hospital. "What we were trying to evaluate is whether or not the foot strike would change in an adolescent – who doesn't yet have a permanently established gate – when they changed their shoe or running speed."

What the study showed

The researchers found that shoe type "dramatically" altered running biomechanics in the adolescent runners. When wearing cushioned heel trainers, the athletes landed on their heel 69.8% of the time at all speeds. With the track flats, the heel was the first point of contact less than 35% of the time; and when barefoot, less than 30% of the time.

Shoes with cushioned heels promote a heel-strike running pattern, whereas runners with track flats and barefoot had a forefoot or mid-foot strike pattern.

"What we found is that simply by changing their footwear, the runners' foot strike would change," said Dr Mullen. "When they ran in the cushioned heel or an average running shoe - even when running a 5-minute mile -the athletes landed on their heel first."

Many adolescent runners train in cushioned heels and compete in track spikes, "which may give them less of a (performance) advantage" in competition, said Dr. Mullen.

As a 2010 study found that heel strike running distributes more energy to hips and knees, running in flat- soled shoes that promote a forefoot strike may "present a healthier foot strike for runners over a lifetime, possibly resulting in fewer hip and knee problems," said Dr. Mullen. More research is needed to determine the effects of shoes on foot strike.

FETISH FOOTWEAR Broadway Musical - The Male Feet Fetish Story

Fetish Footwear

Acclaimed Film Rockin’ Broadway Musical: Explore the Many Steps of Kinky Boots

Fetish Footwear, Acclaimed Film & Rockin’ Broadway Musical: Explore the Many Steps of Kinky Boots
Chiwetel Ejiofor in the film 'Kinky Boots' & Billy Porter in the Broadway musical version

The new musical Kinky Boots tells the true story of a British shoe factory that found success crafting ladies’ footwear...for men. Below, we trace this incredible story’s journey from Northampton to Broadway.

A Life-Changing Phone Call
For four generations, the WJ Brooks shoe-making company in Northampton, England, was known for producing quality men’s footwear. But as cheap imports flooded the market in the 1980s and ’90s, the demand for well-made, expensive shoes began to dwindle, and by 1997, Brooks cut its staff from 80 local employees to 30.
“When you've been working in a factory for 23 years, it becomes your life,” said Steve Pateman, who joined the family firm in 1979, in an interview with the Northampton Chronicle & Echo. “The worst was when I had to make people redundant and break a tradition for the first time."
Just as all seemed bleak, Pateman received a call that would change his life. A fetish store in Folkstone commissioned him to create ladies’ shoes for men. Soon, Divine Footwear was born, a subsidiary of WJ Brooks dedicated to making “kinky boots.” By 1999, the specialty shoes made up 50% of the company’s revenue.
This extraordinary transformation tale caught the eye of BBC documentary series Trouble at the Top, which featured the “kinky boots” story as an example of the ups and downs of British business. Despite the media attention, Divine Footwear ceased production two years later, in 2000. Explained Pateman, “We were unfortunately let down by an American firm who dumped a big debt on us. We had to make the decision to stop production."
Introducing Lady Lola
The factory may have closed, but Pateman and Divine Footwear’s story would live on, thanks to producers at Harbour Pictures, who saw the BBC program and wanted to turn the real-life story into a fictional film.
For the movie adaptation, screenwriters Geoff Deane and Tim Firth took some liberties with the original story: They morphed Steve Pateman into Charlie Price, took the character from his 40s to his 20s, orphaned him and, perhaps most dramatically, created a new character named Lola—a Soho drag queen who would provide a face and heart to Charlie’s new clientele.
Kinky Boots starred Joel Edgerton as Charlie, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Lola, Sarah-Jane Potts as factory worker Lauren and Broadway’s Jemima Rooper as Charlie’s fiancée Nicola. The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2006 and became a modest success. Ejiofor, in particular, won favorable reviews for his performance as Lola and picked up nominations for Golden Globe, British Independent Film and Black Movie Awards.
The movie also found a fan in the man who inspired the whole thing, Steve Pateman. “It's the first time ever I've been emotional when I watched a film," he told The Telegraph.
A Musical Extravaganza
Tony-winning producer Daryl Roth saw Kinky Boots at Sundance and was immediately taken with the story and its potential as a musical. Determined to adapt the film for the stage, she first reached out to Tony-winning director and choreographer Jerry Mitchell. “I watched the movie, cried twice and called [Roth] back saying, “Yeah, this is an amazing story—a really important human story—and I would love to tell it,” Mitchell recalled to Broadway.com. A second piece of the puzzle fell into place when Tony winner Harvey Fierstein agreed to pen the show’s book.
“There’s a huge difference between movies and theater,” Fierstein told the New York Post. “Movies are about story. Theater is about ideas. You have to have something more to keep people in their seats for two and a half hours. So with Kinky Boots, I’ve amped up the story between Charlie and [Lola]. Both feel they are total failures to their fathers, but they become friends and help each other achieve success that even their fathers would have been proud of.”
Fierstein convinced Grammy-winning pop star Cyndi Lauper to step into unfamiliar territory and create her first musical score. Confessing nervousness about making the jump from performer to theater composer, Lauper tole The New York Times, "I wanted them to have something as great as it could be, because they believed in me."
With music and lyrics by Lauper, a book by Fierstein and direction and choreography by Mitchell, Kinky Boots was ready for its pre-Broadway world premiere at Chicago’s Bank of America Theatre in October 2012. The show starred Billy Porter as Lola and Tony nominee Stark Sands as Charlie Price, with Annaleigh Ashford and Celina Carvajal as Lauren and Nicola, the ladies competing for Charlie’s love.
Kinky Boots Struts to Bway
After the Chicago run wrapped in November, the creative team went back into rehearsal to refine the show before Kinky Boots high-kicked to the Great White Way. “I put in a new number for Stark’s character called 'Step One,' Harvey wrote 70 new pages, we removed one song, and we have a new song for the second number in the [drag] club,” Mitchell told Broadway.com. “People are going to be surprised how happy they are when they leave the theater. Harvey’s book and Cyndi’s score are going to surprise them—it’s a great score. It’s a score you want to buy.”
From the beginning, audiences warmed to the characters. “People were walking up the aisles, going crazy—like I remember people being in the aisles at the end of Hairspray,” Mitchell said of the Chicago run. “The difference is that Kinky Boots has a more immediate quality because it’s today, whereas Hairspray was the '60s and we’ve since conquered that particular set of problems for the most part. This story is about equality and accepting people for who they are, and we haven’t completely conquered that yet.”
Added leading man Stark Sands, “It’s a show with a real heart and a really beautiful message, and if we do our jobs in telling the story then we can change the way people think. That’s kind of a lofty expectation, but I feel like this is a really good one.”
Kinky Boots opens at Broadway’s Al Hirschfeld Theatre on April 4.

Pope Francis:

What shoes will he wear?

Pope Benedict XVI wears his red shoes as
Pope Benedict XVI wears his red shoes as he walks down the gangway upon his arrival at the International airport of Zagreb in Croatia.

VATICAN CITY - The favorite guessing game in Rome these days is who will be the next pope. Few take it more seriously than the Gammarelli family, tailors to the Vatican for over 200 years. For the past seven conclaves, Gammarelli has prepared three identical white outfits in small, medium and large for the new pontiff's first appearance on the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica.
Here's a look at what goes into making a new pope look fabulous for the historic moment:
PAPAL TAILORS:
The papal outfits are on display in the window of the small wood-paneled store nestled in the shadow of the Pantheon, where the family moved in 1850 from the original "bottega" (artisan shop) founded just around the corner in 1798. Before the start of the conclave, the outfits will be delivered to the Vatican and left in a room next to the Sistine Chapel, where the newly elected pope changes into his new clothes.
"We hope we got it right," said Lorenzo Gammarelli, the sixth-generation scion of the family business. He explained that the measurements this time around came from a study of the sizes on file of their habitual cardinal customers.
If the pope is their most illustrious shopper, the Gammarelli's daily bread-and-butter comes from dressing prelates in Rome and abroad, in particular the cardinals who will be electing the new pontiff.
WILL IT FIT?:
The Gammarellis make a new set of outfits for each conclave. And sewing custom-made clothes for an unknown customer has had its share of hitches.
Back in 1958 the rotund John XXIII appeared on the balcony with safety pins holding together the back of his cassock. The brand new pope had inadvertently put on the small size and attendants had to slit the robe so that from the front all looked well.
Twenty years later, the broad-shouldered, athletic John Paul II had to squeeze into the large size. Most recently in April 2005, Benedict XVI showed up on the balcony with the sleeves of the black sweater he had worn in the chilly Sistine Chapel showing through the white sleeves of the cassock.
PAPAL DRESS CODE
So what exactly does a pope wear, then, for his first encounter with the flock? The basic garment is the hand-stitched white wool cassock with white cape and wide silk sleeves. The cassock is fastened by 33 silk buttons recalling the years of the life of Christ, and is worn with a silk brocade sash with gold fringe. Later this sash will have the new pope's papal seal embroidered on it.
Over the cassock he will wear the classic burgundy red mozzetta, a short elbow-length cape worn by high prelates for formal occasions, and a gold embroidered stole -- either red or white. The mozzetta in the Gammarelli window is the velvet white fur trimmed version, long in disuse until Benedict brought it back for winter outings. Otherwise the mozzetta is in silk brocade.
According to Gammarelli, papal red differs from cardinal red. Whereas cardinal red signifies the willingness of the individual to offer up his life for the church, the deeper papal red (actually close to purple) derives from the Roman emperors, and originally signified imperial power. Over the years the basic color became white so that the pope could always be easily identified.

HEAD + FEET

The pope wears a white "zucchetto," the beanie-like hat that bishops wear in purple and cardinals have in red.

"Some men have lots of hair, some hardly any, this makes a difference," Gammarrelli said. Here, too, the tailors offer three sizes.
Benedict attracted a lot of fashionista comment on his bright red shoes, which at first were identified as Prada but later disowned by the luxury label. In fact red shoes make up part of the traditional papal garb. Until the mid-1960s popes wore red velvet slippers embroidered with a gold cross, and until not long before that people paid homage to the pope by kissing his slippered foot.
Eventually each new pope chooses his own shoe style. John Paul, for example, favored a sturdy loafer, in a toned-down maroon red. But Gamarelli holds sway in the new pope's balcony debut footwear -- and is offering three sizes of a simple, albeit very red, moccasin.

TRADITION AND PERSONAL CHOICE

The Gammarellis dress the pope from head to toe, from zucchetto to white socks, but underwear is a personal choice. "Each brings his own,"Gammarelli said.
Whether the new pope keeps on wearing Gammarelli is also a personal choice. Of the seven popes they have officially dressed, starting with Pius XI in 1922, only Pius XII declined their services for his papacy, preferring his aristocratic family's personal tailor.
Benedict XVI shared his favors between Gammarelli and the local ecclesiastic tailors nearer the Vatican whom he befriended in his many years as head of the Vatican's Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.
Could the pope one day modernize his wardrobe to include the "clergyman" -- the dark suit with a white priest's collar used by most priests working outside the Vatican?
"I hope not," said Gammarelli. "The pope is different. He has another role and importance. His way of dressing should reflect this."

"We’ve lightened up an entire line of footwear with each shoe weighing in at less than 10 ounces, but kept the fit and protection that made KEEN famous"
Portland, Oregon (PRWEB) March 05, 2013

This spring, KEEN introduces KEEN CNX, a new footwear collection that gives outdoor enthusiasts a low profile, lightweight way to jump, dive and scramble into summer. Just as KEEN’s part-shoe-part-sandal Newport brought lovers of the outdoors a new, hybrid way to connect with the outdoors 10 years ago, this new collection from KEEN brings fresh thinking to lightweight footwear while providing the essential KEEN fit and protection. Designed to feel like a natural extension of the foot, each of the 20 CNX styles weighs 10 ounces or less each and was created to take people on brave new outdoor adventures.
Available in styles for the waterfront, trail and around-town categories for men, women and kids the CNX styles share the following features to achieve essential KEEN fit and feel:
Low profile - The durable midsole with a four millimeter heel-to-toe drop positions the foot in a truer stance to the ground encouraging natural movement without sacrificing support or comfort.
Tried and true KEEN fit – The underfoot design features a slight ridge under the base of the toes, a contoured arch, and secured heel cup which provides the wearer just the right amount of protection.
Simplified upper construction – The simpler design eliminates layers of material for a better fit.
"We’ve lightened up an entire line of footwear with each shoe weighing in at less than 10 ounces, but kept the fit and protection that made KEEN famous," said Ron Hill, vice president of merchandising at KEEN. "City, trail or water, the new CNX collection is ready to protect brave new toes to play on all terrains."
Waterfront CNX
For wet adventures, KEEN introduces the Clearwater CNX for men and women. This low-profile hybrid sandal contains a washable polyester webbing upper, durable midsole with a four-millimeter heel-to-toe drop, and toe ridge in the footbed. The outsole has multi-directional flex grooves for enhanced traction on slick surfaces. With its dynamic bungee lace system, the Clearwater CNX is an easy-on-easy-off breezy water sandal and is perfect for a playful romp along the river or shore.
Multi-sport CNX
The Tunari CNX for men and the Haven CNX for women offer lightweight agility and comfort for light day hiking and scrambles. In addition to having enhanced fit, being low profile and lightweight, both are stitched so the seams are on the outside for an extra-smooth, streamlined feel. Multi-directional flex grooves on the outsole provide freedom of motion and high grip contact with the ground.
Casual CNX
Connecting as easily to hiking trails and the waterfront as to urban playgrounds, KEEN unveils casual KEEN.CNX styles inspired by city streets.
The women’s athletic-inspired Mercer CNX collection is offered in three silhouettes: Ballerina, Lace and Mary Jane. Each features a breathable mesh and suede upper with a streamlined interior. All three are ready to transition from a day in the city, to a walk in the country in colorful style.
In late March, KEEN is hitting the road on a Twitter tour of several cities along the West Coast introducing the CNX collection through a series of fun and daring challenges to its Twitter fans. Others can follow where the KEEN team is with the #BraveNewToes hash tag for a chance to win a pair of shoes.
